⚡ Ion Formation
🔵 Lewis Dot Representation
Before Electron Transfer
Metal has a small number of valence electrons.
After Electron Transfer
The metal loses its valence electron and becomes a cation.
Non-metal Before Transfer
The non-metal needs electrons to complete its outer shell.
Non-metal After Transfer
The non-metal gains electrons and becomes an anion.
🧮 Formula of the Ionic Compound
The total positive charge must equal the total negative charge in an ionic compound.
📚 Common Ionic Compounds
| Metal | Non-metal | Positive Ion | Negative Ion | Compound |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium | Chlorine | Na⁺ | Cl⁻ | NaCl |
| Magnesium | Chlorine | Mg²⁺ | Cl⁻ | MgCl₂ |
| Calcium | Oxygen | Ca²⁺ | O²⁻ | CaO |
| Aluminium | Oxygen | Al³⁺ | O²⁻ | Al₂O₃ |
| Potassium | Fluorine | K⁺ | F⁻ | KF |
📖 What is an Ionic Bond?
Usually, a metal atom loses one or more electrons and becomes a positively charged cation.
A non-metal atom gains one or more electrons and becomes a negatively charged anion.
The attraction between these oppositely charged ions results in the formation of an ionic compound.
💡 Why Do Atoms Form Ionic Bonds?
Atoms tend to achieve a more stable electronic configuration. In many ionic compounds, atoms achieve a noble-gas-like configuration by transferring electrons.
Na: 2, 8, 1
Na loses 1 electron → Na⁺: 2, 8
Cl: 2, 8, 7
Cl gains 1 electron → Cl⁻: 2, 8, 8
